Tottenham 4-0 Everton: Ange's turbo men have nothing to fear ahead of a daunting trip to Newcastle
By Alessandro Schiavone at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Tottenham Hotspur have done their homework ahead of potentially the hardest assignment of the season at Newcastle next Sunday by trashing a hapless Everton side 4-0.
The north Londoners were trying by hook and by crook early on to give their fans some cheers after Monday's frustrating 1-1 draw at Leicester City.
But Pickford, despite a howler that led to Tottenham's second goal, turned a prospective humiliation into a relatively dignified defeat in the form of a 4-0 rout. It could have been a lot worse.
First he repelled Christian Romero who was in unfamiliar territory after being picked out by Son Heung-Min's lobbed pass into space.
Then the Korean himself saw a deflected strike parried away by the England international before James Maddison also failed in his attempts to give Tottenham a deserved lead by failing to lift the ball one-on-one with the Euro 2024 finalist.
If that wasn't enough Brennan Johnson's flicked header also went off target.
Ange Postecoglou's rampant men were as good as the Toffees were poor. And they finally got the lead their dominance warranted after 14 minutes.
Excellent footwork and inroads by Dejan Kulusevski in the box were followed by a pinpoint cutback which Yves Bissouma, back after an internal suspension, fired home first-time in off the crossbar.
Shortly later Jack Harrison had the chance to restore parity but didn't properly connect with a cross at the far-post, scuffing wide.
Son then pounced on a rare Pickford mistake to roll the ball into the gaping net after getting first to a poor first touch to the goalkeeper's left.
After the interval Italy's understudy goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario made a routine save from Jesper Lindstrom's effort shortly after the Dane's introduction. That was the only time the Toffees showed any threat.
Romero then capped his 100th game for the club by rising highest in a crowded area to plant a header in off the woodwork on 71 minutes as Everton's flame flickered irrevocably.
There was certainly no way back for Sean Dyche's outclassed men when Son, rolling back the years, added to his tally after crashing a left footer through Pickford's legs. Dutchman van de Ven deserves a mention after driving forward from just outside his box before feeding the south Korean to his left in the visitors' 18-yard area.
Everton were poor from the word go and after back-to-back trashings now stare down the barrel of another season battling relegation.
If Tottenham repeat today's performance at St James' Park tomorrow week they may stand a chance of improving on their 1-10 aggregate scoreline from the past two seasons.
Incisive passing, an ingenious capacity to create openings at will, goalscoring ability and a bulletproof defence: they ticked most boxed.
