Champions League, Group Game 2

Shakhtar Donetsk 0-3 Atalanta Bergamo

Goals: Djimsiti, Lookman, Bellanova (A)

Whisper it quietly but Ademola Lookman has shown Charlton Athletic youngsters that they can shoot for the stars no matter what.

In recent times Atalanta's Nigerian superstar has created a real pathway for Sparrows Lane hopefuls, by delivering a string of impressive European displays.

His hat-trick in last season's Europa League final is etched in every football supporter's memory and steeped in Italian football history as it ended a 25-year wait for Europa League glory. It was also the only stain of an irrepeatable campaign for Bayer Leverkusen. Undeniably it was one of the greatest individual performances in football history.

And yesterday the mercurial forward, who spent four years at The Valley after joining from Waterloo in 2013 before moving to Liverpool, added another five-star performance to a long line of great days at the European offices.

With Shakhtar Donetsk lacking bite and spite from midfield onwards while also being a soft touch at the back, Atalanta smelled blood and ran riot.

And who else if not Lookman at the helm of it all? He quickly made amends for dragging wide by providing an inswinging cross for Djimsiti after collecting a short pass from Samardzic's free-kick. And the Albanian centre-back pounced to ensure his teammate's miss earlier wouldn't turn out to be costly, by firing past goalkeeper Ryznik.

Not content with only being the provider, Lookman extended the Goddess's [La Dea] lead with an angled finish from ex-Arsenal defender Sead Kolasinac's perfect delivery before half-time.

Konoplya had the chance to reopen the game but somewhat fluffed his lines, rolling wide from a promising position minutes after the restart.

Atalanta showed them again how it's done after tea time, as they went down the other end and killed off the game through Raoul Bellanova who nodded ex-Chelsea flop Davide Zappacosta's cross home at the far end.

Atalanta created a host of opportunities through Zaniolo and Samardzic after Lookman was replaced by Retegui at the hour-mark.

But it's no coincidence that the scoreline remained unchanged for Gian Piero Gasperini's free-flowing Bergamaschi without their talisman, who is a Ballon d'Or nominee thanks to that night in Dublin. He was also a target for PSG last summer and went AWOL to force through a move.

He's done it in the Europa League, he's done it in Serie A and now also in the continent's most prestigious competition.

Lookman, just like Nick Pope, Joe Gomez and Scott Parker before him is proving that anything is possible for teenagers on Charlton's books.

And if he carries on that way he may usurp them all as the Addicks's greatest-ever export.
