Fulham went down to 10 men but still somehow clawed back a late goal to claim a share of the spoils in an action-packed Emirates encounter.

Two goals in two minutes turned the game on its head for the Gunners, who recovered their poise following an opening minute calamity which had gifted the Whites the lead.

But just as they appeared poised to claim a third win out of three in these opening days of the new Premier League season following a second yellow for Calvin Bassey on 83 minutes, Joao Palhinha popped up to steal an unlikely point.

It leaves the Whites still searching for a first ever win at Arsenal, but they will be glad of the draw, having been under the cosh for most of the match, with only scraps of possession.

They might even have won it as an injury time dash by sub Adama Traore almost put visiting fans in dreamland, but Aaron Ramsdale - under pressure to justify his place with David Raya waiting in the wings - pulled off a fine reflex save.

The afternoon began in the worst possible fashion for the hosts when a sloppy backwards pass into space by Bukayo Saka was seized upon by the lurking Andreas Pereira and as Ramsdale tried to get his bearings, an early strike left the keeper floundering as the ball sailed past his right hand and into the bottom corner.

Mikel Arteta's men had 72 per cent possession stats to back up their claim that they ought not to have been behind at the break and they fashioned several openings but let themselves down with a lack of ruthlessness in the box.

Many times Gaby Martinelli stole into dangerous positions, only to fail to locate a team-mate with the final ball. He almost beat former Arsenal stopper Bernd Leno with a low shot after Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard had combined to create an opening for the Brazilian, but the shot was turned aside.

Martin Odegaard did find the net but a clear offside in the build-up ruled out the strike during a frustrating 45 minutes for the hosts as rain belted down and thunder clapped ominously.

But Arsenal were in front when Saka fired home from the spot after Kenny Tete had sent Fabio Vieira flying in the box and then another of the subs, Eddie Nketiah, got in front of Antonee Robinson to steer a low cross from Vieira past Leno.

That looked like being decisive, but Harrison Reed came on and took the outswinging corner that a criminally-unmarked Palhinha met with a scuffed shot which found the far bottom corner.

Fulham will feel it some sort of justice after Bassey's dismissal. His first yellow was for a rather harsh interpretation of time wasting.

Leno had an excellent match against his old side, saving spectacularly from Vieira with a tip over the bar, and considering the Whites had it all to do after Bassey halted a breakaway from Nketiah to receive his marching orders, Marco Silva will surely be happy with how it panned out.

Gunners (4-3-3) Ramsdale - Partey (Zinchenko 56), White, Saliba, Kiwior - Odegaard (Jorginho 84), Rice (Jesus 90), Havertz (Vieira 56) - Saka, Trossard (Nketiah h/t), Martinelli.

Whites (4-3-3) Leno - Tete, Diop, Basset, Robinson - Lukic (Reed 71), Joao Palhinha, Pereira (Cairney 63) - Wilson (Traore 71), Jimenez, Decordova-Reid (Tosin 89)
