Spurs blown away 4-0 by rampant Liverpool to reach League Cup Final
By Jack Burford at Anfield Stadium
Liverpool 4 Spurs 0 (4-1 on aggregate)
Liverpool cruised into the Carabao Cup Final, dominating a lacklustre Tottenham side. Arne Slot’s Liverpool were relentless from the first minute to the last, killing any belief the Spurs faithful may have had.
Cody Gakpo deservedly opened the scoring in the 32nd minute as Mo Salah’s outside-of-the-boot cross was flicked on by Darwin Nunez, allowing Gakpo to dispatch the ball at the far post.
Liverpool headed into half-time level on aggregate, but with a real belief they were on their way to Wembley, while Spurs posed little to no threat in the final third.
Quickly after the break, Liverpool picked up right where they left off, dictating play and putting Tottenham’s defence under immense pressure.
This soon led to Liverpool’s second of the evening as Nunez poked the ball past Antonin Kinsky, prompting the Czech keeper to hopelessly bring the forward down, resulting in a penalty which Salah thumped home.
After a brief spell of Tottenham possession, Liverpool continued to control the game and looked to score their third. That came in the 75th minute after Liverpool carved Tottenham open with a brilliant piece of interplay, which allowed Dominik Szoboszlai to slot the ball past Kinsky.
Three quickly became four as Virgil Van Dijk’s header sent Liverpool firmly on their way to Wembley, leaving a tired-looking Tottenham side hopeless.
Arne Slot’s league-leading side demonstrated the gulf in class between the two teams, showcasing their quality when it really mattered.
It was a fantastic performance for the Reds, setting up the Dutch manager’s first cup final as Liverpool boss.
Spurs, on the other hand, will feel that yet another opportunity has slipped through their grasp after taking a lead to Anfield. Ange Postecoglou’s side can have no complaints about the result, as they never looked ready for the occasion.
Liverpool will now face Newcastle United in the final on March 16t while Spurs will look to make amends on Sunday, needing to beat Aston Villa to keep their FA Cup hopes alive.
