Palace cruise to 3-0 win over 10-man Burnley in Oliver Glasner's first game in charge of Eagles
Crystal Palace 3 (Richards 68, Ayew 71, Mateta (pen) 79)
Burnley 0
The Oliver Glasner era got off to a flying start as three goals in little over 10 second half minutes saw Crystal Palace deservedly see off sorry Burnley at Selhurst Park this afternoon.
Burnley skipper Josh Brownhill was dismissed 10 minutes before half-time for pulling back Jefferson Lerma when through on goal.
And although the Clarets held out until the 68th minute, they succumbed to goals from Chris Richards, Jordan Ayew and a penalty from Jean-Phillipe Mateta as their legs understandably tired.
Palace were at their opponents from the start, looking threatening from set pieces and down both wings.
Clarets goalkeeper James Trafford failed to deal with an early back pass, and the resulting Palace corner ended with a shot from the edge of the box from Lerma which flew over Trafford's crossbar.
Palace were pushing forward and restricted the visitors to just a couple of fruitless forays into their territory in the opening stages.
Set pieces were proving the most likely route to goal for Palace. Joachim Andersen forced a good reflex save from Trafford after 25 minutes after the ball fell to him at the back post from a corner.
Then just three minutes later came Palace's biggest chance thus far. A fine deep cross from the right from Adam Wharton was headed goalwards by Odsonne Edouard, but Trafford was equal to it and saved well low down to his right.
Then came the turning point on 36 minutes. Trafford woefully under hit a pass out from the back, which was quickly latched on to by Lerma. Lerma was grabbed by Brownhill as he attempted to run through on goal and referee Lewis Smith had no option but to dismiss the centre half.
Odsonne Edouard's free-kick when the game restarted clipped the top of Trafford's bar on its way into the Whitehorse Lane stand.
Palace continued pressing after the break - again Lerma finding himself free on the edge of the area to let fly with a shot which was saved low down by Trafford.
Burnley just could not get out and Palace were producing wave after wave of attacks. Wharton, the former Blackburn man who had drawn the ire of the visiting fans all afternoon, was next to go close, curling a shot just over Trafford's bar.
The Clarets did have one half chance, David Datro Fofana heading a cross just wide of Sam Johnstone's right-hand post which, in truth, never really looked like troubling the Palace goalkeeper.
But the Eagles' pressure finally told after 68 minutes. Ayew produced a beautifully inviting cross from the right which was met by the head of Chris Richards and flew past Trafford.
And within three minutes it was 2-0 and game over. A low cross from substitute Matheus Franca from the opposite flank was tapped in by Ayew.
Three soon became four. Franca was tripped in the box, the penalty was placed sublimely to Trafford's left - and Palace were home and dry.
Burnley thought they had pulled one back on 86 minutes - Fofana heading home from close range. But VAR intervened, summing up Burnley's afternoon.
The last thing the 10 Burnley men wanted to see was 12 minutes of stoppage time.
But the overtime was all rather pointless, truth be told. The game was long up for the Lancastrians.
Palace move clear of danger, for now. The Glasner era is up and running.
