Orient carry good FA Cup vibes into precious league win, but it's a bad night for Charlton and AFC Wimbledon
EFL Roundup
This has been quite a week for Orient - as they managed to avoid an FA Cup banana-skin against non-league Oldham, thanks to an injury time goal from keeper Josh Keeley - then followed up with a 3-0 win over Bristol Rovers on Tuesday night.
Spurs loanee Keeley grabbed a slice of Brisbane Road history with his fine glancing header deep into the final knockings against the National League Latics in the ninth minute of added time. And as if that were not drama enough, Dan Agyei - who earlier missed a penalty - touched in an Ollie O'Neill corner after 120 plus minutes to put the O's into the third round, when they will face Championship side Derby County in a mouth-watering tie.
There were no fine margins in midweek though as first-half goals from Dan Happe, O'Neill and Agyei blew Rovers away for a much needed league win. They are now 20th and out of the bottom four and it's now one defeat in seven for Richie Wellens' improving side. An injury to Darren Pratley was the only downside of a comfortable night.
A week ago, the story was far less rosy as a 2-0 home defeat to Huddersfield Town was compounded by a serious injury to winger Jordan Graham - who ruptured a patella tendon in his left knee, it was later confirmed. The luckless 29-year-old was out of action for 10 months with a similar injury before returning in September.
The O's are at Wigan on Saturday.
Orient's League One London rivals Charlton continue to be inconsistent in mid-table and slipped to a 2-1 defeat to Crawley Town at The Valley - a disappointing outcome following successive away defeats at Burton and Walsall.
Daniel Kanu's deft lob cancelled out a first-half opener from Tola Showunmi but Max Anderson struck 10 minutes from time to give the visitors all three points. The Addicks are 12th in the table, eight points adrift of the top six ahead of a weekend trip to Lincoln City. The FA Cup draw paired them with Championship Preston North End at Deepdale.
In League Two, AFC Wimbledon blew a 2-0 lead at home to Newport County and had to settle for a 2-2 draw after conceding a 97th minute equaliser. The Dons netted twice in the opening 20 minutes as James Tilley free-kicks were turned in by Alistair Smith and Matty Stevens. But Michael Spellman quickly reduced the arrears and Shane McLaughlin bagged an injury time penalty for County to claim a point for the Welshmen.
Boss Johnny Jackson received a red card from ref Lee Swabey for his protests at the penalty award. His team drop to eighth place ahead of a visit to Harrogate.
