Johnson on target again as Spurs bag three vital Euro points against Ferencváros

Welsh wizard Brennan Johnson was Spurs’ hero once again as the north Londoners ran out 2-1 winners in a tightly-contested match at the Groupama Arena Budapest .

Ange Postecoglou and his Lilywhites will be more than satisfied with three points and a second away win in 10 games in Europe, but it wasn’t always plain sailing for this young Tottenham side.

The home side looked to have opened the scoring in the 16th minute as Barnabas Varga lost his man and headed home at the back post to the delighted Ferencváros faithful. However the goal was judged to be offside.

Ferencváros continued to impress as they pressed and probed for an opener but against the run of play Papa Mata Sarr calmly slotted the ball home in the 22nd minute after a defensive mix up at the back.

Tottenham then began to take control of the match with Pedro Porro striking the post before half-time.

The Hungarian side continued to create opportunities in the second half with Adama Traore and Matheus Saldanha in particular causing problems for the north London side.

However it was that man again Johnson who looked to have all but wrapped up the three points in the 85th minute with a calmly slotted finish.

Five goals in as many games for Johnson led to the Tottenham away fans proudly singing ‘Johnson again, Johnson again, Johnson again Ole Ole Ole”

In the 90th minute Ferencvaros tried to stage a late comeback with Cristian Ramirez and Barnabas Varga combining to score a well-worked goal.

However Tottenham held on for a hard-fought three points in Budapest.

After the match Postecoglou was quick to praise Johnson

He said: “He’s in a great vein of form right now. He’s really confident. They thrive on that sort of stuff, but his numbers have always been good. I was always curious as to why he was singled out because his numbers were always good when stacked up against the other wingers. Now he’s probably ahead of them with his numbers.”
