Eagles take late flight to deny Magpies
Crystal Palace (0) 1 Munoz 90+4
Newcastle United (0) 1 Guehi og 53
Injury time redemption from Daniel Munoz and Marc Guehi salvaged a precious point for the Eagles - who had looked all set for a fourth home defeat in seven games.
There had been a gloomy air around Selhurst as injury time played out and a Guehi own goal appeared to have settled the outcome - a bitter irony given he was a big summer transfer target for the Geordies.
But in a last act of unexpected defiance, Guehi lifted a ball to the far post that was nodded down inside the near post by Munoz - the man who had missed a golden chance in the first half.
The Eagles will hardly feel they are soaring and only Southampton, Ipswich and Wolves remain below them in the table, but who knows what this salvaged afternoon might do to their confidence.
They may have an easy home game to look forward to next week against Man City but can't expect that to be a cakewalk, so this is a welcome boost to morale.
Oliver Glasner was mightily relieved at the end that a further dent to spirits was avoided. He picked up a post-match booking for his touchline celebrations but probably won't mind too much. He knows how important this draw might prove.
The game itself never hit the greatest of heights and had an opening half hour notable only for a protracted withdrawal of Alexander |sak after several stops in play.
It finally showed some signs of life when Trevoh Chalobah sent a rasping drive just over and Ismaila Sarr almost stabbed home a cross from the right - Nick Pope's legs getting in the way. Even then, the excitement was a bit contrived as a linesman flagged for offside for the second of those pieces of goalmouth action..
The Eagles came closer when a thrilling move completely out of character for the game should have resulted in Munoz finishing off by sliding in at the far post, but the Colombian skewed wide.
The chance had been created by the returning Eberechi Eze's clever touch which allowed Will Hughes to plant an inviting ball forward for Sarr to scamper onto and cross low into the danger zone.
The signs looked good for the hosts then, but it was the Magpies who stole in front after the break with a training-ground free-kick move that caught Palace cold.
Anthony Gordon darted behind the defensive wall to receive a pas from Sandro Tonali and his low cross was turned into his own net by the unfortunate Guehi.
Sarr almost made it 1-1, but was thwarted by Pope and a Muniz follow-up from a tight angle was blocked by Dan Burn. Sarr was also denied by the Geordies' stopper after being found in the box by Lerma and a shot on the turn from Jean-Philippe Mateta had just too much elevation.
That looked like being it. But Guehi and Munoz were not quite done.
