Crystal Palace's FA Cup story ends prematurely as Andre Gomes pulls a beauty out of his hat for Everton

Everton 1-0 Crystal Palace
Goals: Andre Gomes (E)
Crystal Palace became the second London casualty in the space of two days after Brentford to be eliminated from the FA Cup as Everton won the replay 1-0.
The Eagles were undone by an exquisite curling Andre Gomes free-kick in off the post on 42 minutes.
The Portuguese midfielder is on course to revive his injury-hit career having now netted twice in five games.
There was little in the way of creativity from either side and all things considered Palace didn't deserve to lose. In terms of created chances both clubs were level. The Toffees came close to adding to their advantage when Dominic Calvert-Lewin dragged his shot wide from a non-prohibitive angle and Lewis Dobbin's backheel flick was then saved by Sam Johnstone late on.
But Palace had chances of their own through Ebere Eze and Jeffrey Schlupp who both had shots saved by João Virginia. Colombian Jefferson Lerma also sent a poor shot into the Sir Philip Carter Park Stand following a delicious Nathaniel Clyne cutback. The home side's Portuguese keeper offered further proof that he's a dependable no.2 when he was equal to an Odsonne Edouard shot on the turn.
Yet in the end Gomes' free-kick was worthy of winning any football match in the world.
Just why Roy Hodgson decided to hook talisman Eze midway through the second half with Palace needing a goal remains quite a mystery.
The south Londoners now have a tricky away fixture at the Emirates against Arsenal coming up in two days.
And to get anything from it, unlike tonight, they have to take their chances.
