Charlton young guns fire the Addicks past playoff-contending Barnsley
Charlton 2-0 Barnsley
Youngsters Jes Rak-Sakyi and Tyreece Campbell fired Charlton to a 2-0 win over playoff contenders Barnsley at The Valley.
The victory marks the third league game in a row where the Addicks have taken all three points.
Nineteen-year-old winger Campbell scored a stunning solo goal to open the scoring, picking the ball up on the left flank before driving at the Barnsley defence and releasing a left footed shot that beat Tykes goalkeeper Bradley Collins at his near post.
Subsitute Macauley Bonne announced his return to the Valley after three years with QPR by hitting the post after a fine turn, before the on-loan Crystal Palace forward Rak-Sakyi tapped in the rebound on the hour.
Meanwhile the visitors had their fair share of chances in the first half. Tykes forward Devante Cole should have headed the promotion-chasing Yorkshiremen in front after 7 minutes, heading wide from within the six-yard box after being left unmarked from a corner.
In the last minute of the half, Barnsley wing-back Nicky Cadden hit the bar with a headed effort from a similar position.
The Yorkshiremen applied pressure after the break, forcing Addicks keeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer into a succession of saves in the early minutes of the second half in an otherwise untroubling afternoon for the Charlton defence.
The match was Charlton’s first contest since their midweek trip to Old Trafford, where they were ultimately undone by two stoppage time goals from Marcus Rashford.
Charlton travel to Peterborough next Saturday where they will be looking to make it four league wins on the spin, while Barnsley host Accrington.
