Charlton take the derby honours at the last as Berry ruins Leyton Orient's Valley visit
Charlton Athletic (0) 1 Berry 90+2
Leyton Orient (0) 0
A stop-start game got the outcome that was starting to look beyond it as Luke Berry stole in to slot home a late chance that settled a stodgy east London derby.
Charlton will feel they deserved it as they had the better of it in terms of possession and touches in the opposition penalty area and hit a post, but they struggled to carve out the clear openings they needed to make the difference - until they finally didn't.
They were into injury time and the long balls seeking out big sub Chuks Aneke when a nod-down through the middle broke kindly to Berry - and the summer signing from Luton Town gleefully swept home.
For their part, the O's defended manfully, accepted their own limitations to do much damage at the other end, but ultimately paid the price for not creating enough danger in attack.
This was a game the Addicks expected to win, given seven of the past eight clashes between the teams had been won by the home side. Last term, the sides traded 1-0 victories on home soil. And so it proved.
The opening salvos were nothing to write home about. The energised home fans got progressively more subdued until a moment of controversy arrived after 25 minutes when Josh Edwards had to be stretchered off after a lunging challenge from ex-Valley man Sean Clare, which also broke up a promising counter-attack.
Clare apologised to the stricken Edwards but that did not spare him a yellow card from ref Ed Duckworth or the subsequent barracking from irate home supporters. Gander up, Tyreece Campbell tore down the left flank and pulled the ball back to skipper Greg Docherty, whose first touch took him just too wide to cause more damage.
But that brief injection of vim did not last and we were soon back into midfield tussling, with no-one getting an obvious upper hand. Charlie Kelman might have changed that with a stab at goal after taking control in the box but his effort was easily saved by Will Mannion. A Gassan Ahadme header also didn't do enough to trouble Zach Hemming.
Charlton did finish the half the stronger though, and it promised better things but the frustration boiled over for both sides at times, with both Nathan Jones and Richie Wellens receiving second half bookings for showing displeasure from the sidelines at some of the decisions.
Conor Coventry linked with sub Thierry Small to curl just over, then Kayne Ramsay burst though the middle to send a deflected shot against un upright, with Hemming stranded.
But Charlton came good in the end to make it two wins out of two in League One, while unlucky Orient have lost both their openers.
