Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang realises the importance of the 2-0 over fourth-place Chelsea on Saturday, and can see the striking partnership with Alexander Lacazette only getting better and better.

The French-born Gabon international , 28, said of the win that puts them just three points behind faltering Blues: “It was very important. We knew that it was important to get a result. It’s a very good win for us because now we are only three points from Chelsea. We’re not far. We will try to keep the distance very low.”

Aubameyang said of playing alongside France striker Lacazette, who scored the opening goal tab the Emirates: “It was really nice. I think we did a lot of runs, a lot of effort for the team, we worked a lot, and of course we are happy when we play together because we have such a good feeling between us. It was cool.

“I think since I joined here at Arsenal he was here and he came to me and talked to me and now we are going well. We have the same vision about football and I love him. He’s a great guy.

“I think it is nice between us, it’s not a bad rivalry, we are friends when one is going well the other is happy and that’s the most important thing, to do well.

“When you have a striker like Alex near to you then he’s really good to play with. I hope we will play more games together.”

Aubameyang was signed by the north Londoners for £56million from German outfit Borussia Dortmund last January, so how does he think he has done?

“Sincerely, I think I can do a bit more,” he admitted.

“I hope I will. I try to. I hope I will do it.

“This gives us a lot of confidence that we can finish the season really well. It’s good. This kind of win is important for all of us.

“We played very well. I think everybody put in a great effort, we played like a team and that’s why we won.”
